York YMCA Swimming has high expectations. We are committed to providing a challenging, supportive, and fun environment, to teaching good values that reach beyond the pool, and to giving our swimmers the opportunity to reach their full potentials in competitive swimming.

York YMCA Swimming participates in both USA Swimming and YMCA swimming competitions.
PROGRAM FEATURES
The York YMCA competitive swimming program has the following emphases:
TECHNICAL: learning good technique, efficiency, and beauty in the water.
PHYSICAL: developing speed and endurance through training in all four strokes in an individual medley and endurance based program.
COGNITIVE: learning about swimming, the rationale for training, diet and nutrition, etc.
PSYCHOLOGICAL: learning and practicing the attitudes of a champion; goal-setting; and maintaining poise under pressure.
SOCIOLOGICAL: team building and relationships.
At York YMCA, we are about more than just swimming fast: we build champion people, not just champion swimmers.

York YMCA Swimming downtown branch offers practices six days a week. Swimmers are placed in groups by the coaches according to age, skill level, and commitment.
SENIOR group practice 6 days a week, for two and a half hour sessions.
JUNIOR group practice 4 to 5 times a week, for one and a half hour sessions.
NOVICE group practice 3 times a week, for one hour sessions.
Southern Branch: all levels practice four days a week for 1-1/2 hours.
Senior A (approx. 13 & Over): $90/month
Senior B: $85/month
Junior A (approx. 9 to 12): $70/month
Junior B: $60/month
Novices (8 & Under): $50/month

COACHING STAFF
Michael Brooks has been the head coach at the York YMCA since October of 2006, in that short time leading the team to state Y championships in Cadet and Prep girls and a runner-up finish in Cadet boys.
His swimmers have notched well over a hundred National Top-16 rankings, scores of individual and relay Zone and Far Western championships, hundreds of state championships.
He has been a frequent speaker at coaches’ clinics nationwide, and is seen as a leader in stroke technique and teaching, the psychological aspects of developing swimmers, and building developmental programs.
He served previously as head age group coach at Brophy East Swim Team in Phoenix, AZ, and head coach at the York site of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club.
Volunteer assistant coaches Andy Stewart and Clyde Vedder provide invaluable support in working with swimmers individually or in small groups.
Rich Shinnick coaches the Shrewsbury branch of the swimming team. A former Olympic Trials level swimmer himself, Rich has also helped with the York site’s Novice group.
TRAINING
York YMCA competitive swimming has training groups to suit swimmers of all levels, from novice to national.
York Y is a comprehensive developmental training program, planned and administered by professional coaches dedicated to building the finest program in the nation.
Throughout the year York YMCA Swimming offers specialized CLINICS & MINI-CAMPS. These sessions are open to all competitive swimmers and primarily focus on stroke development, starts, turns, and the mental aspects of improving performance. Call for more information.
We also offer two SEASONAL COMPETITIVE PROGRAMS, which compete in local dual meet leagues: a “cold-weather” season from mid-October to mid-February that participates in the CPAL league, and a summer league team from early June to mid-July that is part of the CASL league.
